Lambey highschool comics...EXPOSED!

Last time I went home to visit my parents, I was digging through some old books in my closet and came across some buried treasure. Tucked away in a highschool biology book, on the back of some handouts, was a long forgotten comic I had drawn.

You see...back in the day, I was a huge Punisher fan. My friends and I would argue about who would win in a fight...Punisher or Spiderman (ppff....Punisher of course!!) Anyhow...in my Marvel bliss, I would often scribble out my own adventures during class. He was usually fighting endless ninjas, spiderman, daredevil, and in this case....street punks. Let the carnage (and embarrasment) ensue!!!

In case you missed it..that last panel where he's running means "the end". Story was never my strong suit. Viva la Punisher!!!

That's pure gold.

You've got to show these to Kurt. It's right up his alley!

I also know Kevin has some old superhero art. I remember him showing me about 10 years ago! If we ask real nice, maybe he'll show his too.

My kid art was mainly drawings of Sesame street, Ultraman, and Star Wars. They are clear in my head but it was all thrown out. That's what happens when you think you've grown up and won't care to look back on that stuff. I'm really sad about that - you are lucky to have kept these!

I do have my second grade flip books though - I'll have to bring those in :)

The blood on these is the icing on the cake!

Damn Steve, for a Canadian, you were awfully vicious as a kid. That guy was definitely dead by the time of the back elbow in panel 37, but in true Punisher fashion, he just had to throttle him a bit more.

These are sweet: you have to include them in the next sketchbook!

Thanks for the comment on my blog by the way: I'm always afraid of WMS-ing my color selections too much!

Man o man...
love it. Its quite evident that SNAP is your favorite sound effect.
like Dave, I remember mine too. I really wish i still had em and looking at these it makes me sad that i dont. Its funny how people evolve. I would never have figured you to be into this stuff by looking at what youre into now. Kinda funny actually.
BTW
I still know guys that draw like this.

Sweet!! I would totally go out and buy this book NOW! The blood is extra-sweet and shows you really cared.

Its a great joy to see this stuff and to remember a more innocent time when we'd entertain ourselves by drawing super-heroes pummelling each other on paper. Nowadays, of course, kids would just load up the punisher videogame...

Great stuff!

Steve!!!
Man you must have been one bad Mo-Fo in high school cause your new stuff is so sugary sweet. I love Punishers pose in panel 41. He doesn't even waste the energy it would take to drive the guy into the ground and just drops him like a sack of meat!!! Classic!!!!

Excellent choreography. The black and white and red really sell this ala "Shindlers List." Very poetic.

MORE! I particulary like the ballet-like grace of pose 13...beautiful.

This gives me the same deeply nostalgic feeling as the Napoleon Dynamite liger ... A bittersweet longing for the simpler days of my youth.

Also, the use of the numbers is so 1926. Brilliant!

Actually, a lot of the poses are right where they need to be. Anyone who saw this when you were in highschool should have known you'd have a great career in the arts.

FAN-freekin-TASTIC.

I love lookin' back on older stuff! It really is a treasure. So many memories and a lotta times you can actually remmeber your process and what you were thinking in a particular drawing. Such a great mental comparison to your current work.

Parents and teachers were so worried about drawings like this! We were all so violent! It was taboo. It was fun when we were kids. We all turned out fine and if anything is pushed our creativity. Hope no kids out there are getting stunted by "concerned talks" within the PTA...

Holy Smokes Steve!! I remember you telling me about these! LOL!! and the commentaries have me and my wife rolling!! But I am surprized that with all those rippling muscles with super tight tights and tuseling bodies that none has mention the homoerotic nature of this stuff!! HHEHEHE!! I got to go find some of my old work and post it up too!! It just a good reminder to younger artists that with hard work anything is possible!! Werd!!!
