Fanboy TitleCards Pt.02

A couple of posts ago, I showed you some of the final titlecards from Fanboy. As a little added behind the scenes, I figured it'd be fun to show some of the ideas that didn't make the cut for each card. A lot of these are axed because they didn't match the theme of the episode, or the title changed, or are better suited for other cards. I'll also apologize in advance for the super crappy drawings. They're not really meant to be pretty....just quick thumbnail concepts.

Anyways, enough jibbity jabber...hope you enjoy!

Hanna Barbera Toys

I have a love/hate relationship with vinyl toys. I'd love to become a huge collector because there's so many amazing toys to be had......but I hate how overly expensive the majority of them are. It's truly a commitment thing where one has to either be all in, or all out.....and due to the ass up economy right now, I'm all out.

In any case, there are many great toys out there......especially of the Hanna Barbera variety......and in paticular from Funko. Here's a few that have caught my eye my so far.

(I should add that these were beautifully photographed and "borrowed" from the amazing flickr feed of Jeff Pidgeon. Thanks, Jeff!!)

This one I actually broke down and bought. I love me some Kellman Flintstones.

I once saw this complete collection of Bobbleheads for sale on ebay. Unfortnately I lost out to the high rollers. Enjoy your jigglers, jerks!

These minis are from a japanese company called Big Head Toy company, and can be purchased on Ebay for $40.

Seeing all these great designs ,being faithfully translated into vinyl, got me to thinking.....why hasn't someone tried doing this in 3d?

Well....someone did. Check out this playlist of great translations from modeler, John Pica.

Limp nosed Donald Duck!!

Lambey's Grab Bag o Books

I treated myself to some books recently for my birthday. Between my wife, friends, and family, I usually get to score a pretty sweet little amazon shopping spree out of it, and this year I had a fairly broad range of material built up on the ol' wishlist.. Here's a few of the gems in the bunch that I definitely recommend.

The Cream of Tank Girl. Great little collection of Jamie Hewlett's early comic book work. If you look close enough, you'll see the Gorillaz style slowing starting to taking shape.

Being a Pig is Nice. Dan Krall's first foray into the children's book realm. Loaded with funny, gorgeous illustrations. Definitely not one to be missed.Puss in Boots. Not to be confused with Shrek crappy cat, this is J.P. Miller's rare LGB that was just reprinted and released.

How to Talk to Girls.
This one is loaded with charming illustrations by the talented Kei Acedera of Imaginism fame.

To keep things educational, I grabbed Drawn to Life: The Walt Stachfield Lectures. Packed with golden nuggets of knowledge, and very afforable.

Next up, was Pixar: The Art of Up. Loaded with sexy old people and hot balloon action. I doubt I have to sell anyone on this one.

And finally, not to be missed are these two storybook gems:

Beware of Dug, by Christian Robinson. Fantastic book in an appealing cutout style. If you'd like a sneak peek, then swing by Christian's blog.

And Ronnie Del Carmen's My Name is Dug. Another great little book with gorgeous visuals. Lucky for us, Ronnie has also posted a sneak peek over on his blog.

That's it, I'm broke! Hope you guys enjoyed Lambey's Grab Bag.

Poop and prints

Some design practise from awhile ago. One guess about which book I was looking at for inspiration that weekend. Lots of flaws going on here of course, but I thought the ideas were fun.

In other news, I just updated the store with the most popular choices from the print poll earlier. Many thanks to all who dropped by and threw in a vote. It's much appreciated!

Cheers!

Fanboy and Chum Chum intro

Here's something unexpected this morning. It seems that the intro to the show I've been working on has been posted over on the frederator blog.

Although there's no mention in the post, I've been doing character designs on the show for about a year now and it's been a blast. There's not many cartoony 3d shows out there (especially in tv), and hopefully this will help change some of that.

Anyways, hope you enjoy the clip!

Poll for Prints

It's that time of year again where I update the store blog with some new prints for sale. I'm not completely sure which ones to add yet, so I thought I'd enlist the aid of you guys. Please take a gander at the smattering of images above, and then toss in a vote for which ones you'd like to see added. Once enough people chime in with their favorites, I'll post the most popular choices over at the store.

Cheers!

(P.S. If I've missed some images that people like, feel free to mention it)

Golden Legacy: 65 Years of Golden Books

Much excitement and then sadness in the Lambey household tonight.

The excitement, you ask? I just found out that there is an exhibition going on right now that's showcasing original artwork from the last 65 years of Golden Books. Tons of incredible artwork from artists like Richard Scarry, J P Miller, Aurelius Battaglia, Mary Blair, and Gustaf Tenggren.

The sadness? The exhibition is located at the Enoch Pratt Free Library waaay out in Baltimore, Maryland. If you're extremely lucky enough to be in the area, then the show runs from March 02-May09, and the admission is...get this.... FREE!

If you're not one of the lucky few, then despair not. Swing by "Child at Art"'s Flickr page where she's been kind enough to post up nice high quality pics of the whole set.

Have a great weekend!

Doritos: Nacho Diablo

Recently, mi amigos Jason Hickman and Adam Terrio created a commerical spot for a Doritos contest. Their entry is entitled "Nacho Diablo" and can viewed by clicking image below:

First prize is $25, 000 and a percentage of whatever reveue is generated by the commerical. SO, if you like what you see as much as I did, then please help them out by throwing in a vote.

In other news, I'd like to apologize for the break in the Alphabet theme I've been posting. Work and freelance has been a little heavy recently, but rest assured I have some new posts coming. Here's a sneak peek at very quick color key for the next one.

Q is for Quick Draw McGraw.

I always thought it'd be funny if Quickdraw pretended to be a real horse to capture an outlaw.

Y is for Yogi...

Well, the bad news is that I've already broken one of my new year's resolution and had a Red bull. The good news is that I'm still continuing my Golden Book artist studies. Hope you guys are enjoying the pieces!

D is for Donald.

Studying some J. P. Miller and Richard Scarry tonight. I ballsed up on the feather rendering, but it came ok regardless. These might make for a fun series. Maybe M is for mouse?

New Year Resolutions...

It's a whole new year and with that, comes time to reflect on future aspirations. Here are 25 random things that are rolling around in my head...not necessarily only for just this year, but in years to come.

1) to make more so that I can work less. Wishful thinking?
2) to spend time studying and practising the techniques of the masterful artists I really enjoy.
3) to stop drinking energy drinks (I am a red bull/ yellow vitamin water addict)
4) to learn to tie a tie.
5) to stop spending all my spare time looking at art (books, blogs, dvds, prints, etc) and start creating some instead.
6) to create thoughtful gifts for my wife instead of buying them.
7) to get exercise other than moving around my arm.
8) to learn to sketch in a sketchbook instead of on post-it notes.
9) to really get to know people in my family as individuals instead of as just siblings/parents.
10) to start my own family.
11) Apply to a major feature studio.
12) Take a painting class so that I can learn to paint with real light and volume instead of graphic cheats.
13) Find a non-art related hobby.
14) Wear sunscreen at the beach. Ghosts don't tan, they just go lobstery red.
15) Recognize the positives of my work instead of only seeing the negatives.
16) to go for a walk with my wife each night after work. I always feel much better when I do.
17) to buy a motorcycle, learn to drive it and then go on a roadtrip from California to Nova Scotia.
18) Reconnect with friends lost over the many years.
19) Set aside one week of vacation and travel to an exotic destination each year.
20) Get a greencard.
21) Watch a movie for pure enjoyment instead of analysing it for it's faults.
22) Increase my word power.
23) To buy a good camera and take a photography course.
24) to create my own "art of" book.....and actually be proud of it.
25) to crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentation of the women (I might have stolen this one from Conan.)

Happy New Year, Everyone!!

Happy Halloween!

A little werewolf illo to celebrate all Hallow's eve...

...and some ruff monster concepts I did recently for an upcoming character on Fanboy. Seems fitting for Halloween. Why all the same shape? The challenge was to match the design to a silhouette of two character standing on each other's shoulders. Anyone want to make a guess which one made the cut?

Happy Halloween, everyone!!

Project Re-Design: A Juggernaut a day...

So what the hell is Project Re-Design? Is it some kinda lame reality show on NBC? Hells no!! K...lemme explain.

Recently, I was at swap meet and came across a stack of old comics titled "Who's Who", and "The Marvel Universe".

After leafing through a few, I remembered how many fun (and super lame) superheroes there are in the comic book universe. Then it dawned on me...how fun would it be to take these characters and re-imagine them. It'd make for good design practise, and it'd be a chance for me to rekindle my love for comics (long dormant since the Liefeld Image age). The challenge would be to do a design a day for a week, or until inspiration runs dry for that character.

So first up to the plate is the Juggernaut.

01) Friday......."Prison Punkass Juggernaut".

02) Saturday........"Emo Juggernaut".

*Many thanks to A.S. for the tweaks on this one.*
03) Sunday......."Juggernaut Gigante".

04) Monday......."8-pack Juggernaut".

05) Tuesday......."Pumpkin Head Juggernaut".

06) Wednesday......."Egg-ernaut".

07) Thursday......."Junkyard Dog Juggernaut".

Back on friday with the final juggernaut. Color this time, I promise!

Rejects

Some rejects from the ol' day job. The idea was to fill a classroom set with various educational posters. It was a ton of fun, but in the end, they were deemed a little too young and golden book-ish for a highschool classroom. Glad they can find a home here on the blog, instead of the trash bin.

For Ahmed...

The bane of every layout artist is the time consuming crowd scene. It usually involves taking a huge number of characters and jigsaw puzzling it together in such a way that it's pleasing to the eye.

Luckily we didn't have a lot of crowd scenes on Tigre, so when this scene from Ricky Garduno's board came across my desk, I eagerly accepted the challenge. This was the final episode of El Tigre, so everyone was going all out to make it special. Especially Ricky. He made sure to include every Tigre villian that had ever appeared on the show in one giant villian pile. I still love you, Ricky but my drawing paw wanted to stab you in the jaw. Hope I done you proud!
